Getting Around Agra

Rail

Agra is well-connected to all major Indian cities by rail. Several railway stations are conveniently located within easy reach of most parts of the city. The Taj Express, a special luxury train service between Delhi and Agra, is an excellent way to travel between the capital city of India and the ancient empire of the Mughuls. Rail services also include the Shatabdi Express and the Intercity Express, linking Agra with Delhi, Gwalior and Bhopal.

Public Bus and Coach

The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transportation Corporation (UTSRTC) operates city buses to and from the main stops and sites of the city. Deluxe and ordinary coach tours are available at the Cantt railway station, providing an excellent transportation option for the tourists arriving in Agra. The Indian Tourist Development Corporation (ITDC) and UPSRTC operate special tour packages during the peak tourist season in Agra.

Rental Cars and Taxis

For the tourists arriving in Delhi, the journey to Agra might seem a tedious task ahead, if travelling via public transport. The rental cars available at the Delhi airport are ideal if one needs to avoid the generally crowded transport services. Relatively inexpensive, rental cars are available at the airport.

Taxis are also a good choice for travelling to Agra from Delhi or travelling within the city of Agra. Beware of dubious taxi service providers charging exorbitant prices; it’s best to hire a taxi from a recognised company.

Other Modes

The auto-rickshaw, also known as a trishaw and tuk-tuk, and commonly referred to as an “Auto” by the locals, is a popular mode of transport. Three-wheeled and compact in its size, the vehicle is easily manoeuvred through both wide and narrow roads. Most often, travelling in an auto-rickshaw is very easy on the wallet. It’s best, however, to agree on fares before embarking on the trip.

Cycle-rickshaws are also available in Agra and throughout India. Peddled by the driver, these are also cheap but quite slow to arrive at the destination.
