Travelling to Adelaide can be very straightforward: the city has good road and rail connections with other Australian states as well as boasting an international airport, Adelaide International Airport.

Arriving by Air

Arriving by Train

Adelaide Metro operates train lines to the towns and suburbs surrounding Adelaide. Journeys within South Australia or to other states within the country will be made using Great Southern Rail. Mostly aimed at leisure trips, rail travel can be a very expensive way to travel around the country compared to air travel.

Arriving by Road: Driving

If driving from Melbourne, take Highway 1 in a north-westerly direction. The same road stretches across southern Australia to link Adelaide with Perth. However, before embarking on intercity journeys, drivers should bear in mind that distances between Australian cities can be huge.

Arriving by Road: Coach Services

Many regional bus services operate from Adelaide’s Central Bus Station. It is possible to travel to pretty much any destination Australia from Adelaide using the country’s vast road and coach network, however longer distance journeys can take up to several days, especially if you intend to travel from one end to the other. In this instance, you would be much better off using one of the many low-cost airlines, or else taking the train if you prefer to still see the landscape as you travel.
