Getting Around New York
New York's mass public transport system based on buses and the subway sets it apart from other cities across the US. It is relatively good and cheaper than the ever-present yellow cabs which have become synonymous with the city. Unlicensed cabs should be avoided.
Walking is often the best way to experience the city, and during rush hours, when buses and taxis are caught up in the gridlock and the subway is overcrowded or delayed, it can also be the fastest way to get around.
Generally though, the most efficient way to get around is the 24-hour subway system as most of Manhattan's sights are near subway stations. The bus system is simpler but slower, and better suited for shorter distances or for travelling across town. The subway and bus fare are standard; note that buses require the exact change in coins, not dollar bills. MetroCards allow free transfer between buses and the subway within two hours. Driving in New York is not recommended for visitors - traffic is heavy, the drivers are notoriously aggressive and parking elusive and exorbitantly priced.
Car Rental
You'll need a valid national driving licence or an International Driving Permit and a major credit card to hire a car in New York. Minimum third-party insurance is required and drivers must be at least 25 years old. Branches are located throughout the five boroughs.
That said, driving in Manhattan is not recommended to visitors. The traffic is horrendous and the quintessential New York City experience is to be stuck in traffic. Add to that the impatient drivers and exorbitant parking fees, and you get the picture. Street parking is elusive. The business and entertainment areas get particularly congested and the fast pace can prove intimidating for tourists.

Public Transport
Public transport in New York is run by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), New York City Transit (tel: (718) 330 1234). Services are cheaper and more efficient than the number of private companies also operating in the city.
Subways are a fast, safe, easy and inexpensive way to get around the city. Trains run 24 hours a day, with waiting time between trains normally just a few minutes, depending on the time of day. Subways traverse Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx; Staten Island is served by the Staten Island Railway (SIR), with connections to the Staten Island Ferry from the St. George station. The SIR trains run 24/7; the fare is the same as for bus/subway.
Routes are identified by letters, such as A B C and by numbers, such as 1 2 3. The different lines are different colors on the subway map.
Subway Entrances: Subway entrances in New York are usually found on street corners, with a staircase descending to the station. The stop will have a large green ball outside (indicating a booth inside where you can buy MetroCards) or red ball (you must have fare available to enter).
Cost: The cost is $2 per ride, no matter how far or how many times you transfer (as long as you don’t pass through the turnstile gate; if you do, another fare must be paid). Purchase a MetroCard for single rides or multiple rides, which can save you money if traveling multiple times in a short period. Options include the $7.50 one-day Fun Pass; the seven-day ($25), 14-day ($47) and 30-day ($81) unlimited ride cards; and a pay-per-ride card. More detailed information.
Your MetroCard can be your ticket to reduced prices for popular New York City destinations and attractions. Find the latest MetroCard Deals.
Bus services are extensive and bus stops are located on street corners approximately every two or three blocks. Bus fares are paid with a MetroCard or exact change (no bills accepted). If you buy the ticket on board the bus, you will get a transfer that cannot be used on the subway without paying an additional charge. Buses operate 24 hours daily.
