When to Visit - Arts and Events
For nine days every October the clear New Mexico skies become a riot of colour as hundreds of balloons lift off from Albuquerque's Balloon Fiesta Park. Indeed, the city's annual Balloon Fiesta is the largest held anywhere in the world and has become a Mecca for ballooning fans. It wasn't always so: 26 years ago the occasion drew a mere 13 balloons with 10,000 spectators. Now nearly 1000 balloons take part and are watched by more than 1.5 million people.
Locals have become enormously proud of the Fiesta, especially since it has become the most photographed event in the world. It's all thanks to the crystal skies provided by the region's perfect October climate, and a phenomenon called the 'Albuquerque Box'. This is a combination of weather patterns and geographic landscape, which allows balloonists greater control of their flights to the extent that they can even return to the launch field.
Albuquerque Dining
Like most North American cities, Albuquerque enjoys a wide diversity of food from around the world. No visit to this region would be complete without tasting at least a sample of La Cocina, or New Mexican cuisine. Don't make the mistake of calling it 'Mexican food' or 'Tex-Mex'; the dishes of New Mexico reflect a unique blend of Hispanic and Indian cultures. The Spanish explorers introduced European vegetables and learned from the indigenous Indians to incorporate corn into their diet.
La Cocina has four main ingredients: the tortilla (a round, wafer-thin bread), the pinto bean, cheese and chilli. This is the home of the chilli (and consequently salsa) and they come in more than 2000 different varieties. There are all shapes and sizes, not to mention colours, and they are prepared in as many different ways. But remember, the spiciness of chillies can vary enormously, and those worried about the heat factor should consult their waiter.
Albuquerque Tipping Advice
Restaurants in Albuquerque do not usually add gratuities to the bill, so tipping is customary with a recommended 15% expected where customers deem the service to be good. Should the meal and service be excellent then a gratuity of 20% would not be exceptional. Tips in taxis should be paid along similar lines. The recommended rate for doormen, parking attendants and valets is USD 1.00.
