If you are a regular fan of the Oprah Winfrey Show, you hear the host mention the Magnificent Mile at least once per episode. This fantastic stretch of world famous Michigan Ave. in the Near North section of downtown offers many high end shopping choices that simply aren’t found very many other places. You’ll find towering malls here as well as exotic boutiques selling items for thousands of dollars. Nearby on Michigan Ave, you’ll find other, more affordable stores anchoring both ends. It is safe to say that shopping in Chicago begins right here on the Magnificent Mile.

While old State Street is a mere shadow of its former self, there are still enough choices here to make it a must visit. What the Magnificent Mile is today, State Street was decades ago. However, the closing of several major department stores has really cut down on the glamour here, but there is still something to be said for shopping in an area where others have shopped for nearly a century.

If you want to stay downtown and see what the future of shopping in Chicago has to offer, check out the uber-fashionable stores located in Wicker Park, Bucktown and especially Lincoln Square. Wicker Park is the place to be if you really love music. Many stores here never stopped selling vinyl records, and many have begun doing so once again thanks to renewed demand, while Bucktown has one of a kind stores that you likely won’t find back home.

The River North section of downtown is the place you want to head to if you have art on your mind or one of a kind home goods. One of the great things about Chicago is that there are so many shops here that are only located here, which means that you have the chance to buy clothing, souvenirs, home wares and other items that can only be found here. This part of town alone could tide you over for at least a full day. Many people don’t realize it, but the River North section of Chicago boasts the largest concentration of art galleries in the United States outside of Manhattan. Even if art isn’t exactly your thing, you’ll find plenty to keep your attention here.

If you blew through all of your reading material on the plane, make a bee-line to Hyde Park and check out the huge number of new and used bookstores here. This is the ultimate Chicago destination for those that love to read or for those that simply love to collect books. One final spot to check out, in the Near South section of the city, you will find a bookstore known as Printer’s Row, the largest and best known all-academic bookstore in the world.

Most shopping establishments are open nine a.m. to five p.m. Monday through Saturday. While many do have business hours on Sundays, they tend to be shorter than their weekday hours. Many chain shops also have extended evening hours throughout the week.
