Atlanta is quickly becoming a true hot spot for convention travelers from around the world and from around the country. It may not be up there with places like Chicago, Orlando or Las Vegas, but it has climbed up the national ratings considerably over the last decade. According to the most recent census, Atlanta is the 8th largest city in the United States when you consider the entire metro population, and is the largest city in the south-eastern quadrant of the United States. The city has more than its fair share of big time businesses. Coca Cola, Delta Airlines and AT&T Mobility all call Atlanta home. The city boasts the third largest concentration of Fortune 500 company headquarters in the country, getting beat out only by New York and Houston. As stated above, the entire region is serviced by the world’s busiest airport - Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Atlanta is also becoming a hotbed for cyber and high tech jobs. According to a recent study, Atlanta ranked 10th in the nation with over 125,000 high tech jobs within its borders. Delta airlines is the biggest employer here, and together with the help of budget air carrier AirTran, the two airlines have helped to make Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport the busiest in the world. Atlanta is also known, of course, for being a broadcast and media center thanks to Ted Turner and his media conglomerate that was sold to Time-Warner. One CNN Center is not only a major tourist attraction in the middle of downtown, it is also the home of the biggest and best known cable news network in the world: CNN. One other noteworthy organization that calls the Atlanta metro area home is the national Centers for Disease Control. Some of the most important work in the nation in done here as it pertains to identifying new diseases and issuing warnings on possible pandemics that may begin to affect the way of life of people in the United States and throughout the world. The CDC works hand in hand with similar organizations around the world to help protect mankind from the next major virus or illness.

Dress Code

In most situations, American dress is fairly informal, and as the heat of spring and summer approach in Atlanta, it’s not hard to spot many at various companies in short sleeved dress shirts and slacks. Women are often found in sleeveless professional style shirts and skirts and pants. However, professional formal attire is expected within some companies as well as in courthouses and those businesses within the financial sector.

Greeting Someone in Atlanta

A handshake is the most typical form of greeting throughout the US, and Atlanta is no exception. Addressing new business contacts by their first name is wholly acceptable. Make certain, however, that you use their preferred name.

Business Hours and Banking

While this varies based on the industry and where the specific business is located, many companies are open between the hours of nine and five. Most banks keep the same hours, though some are open on Saturdays. More often than not, both companies and banks are closed on state and federal holidays.

Smoking

Smoking in public is often considered rude in Atlanta, and the practice is banned in restaurants, bars, and hospitals. It is also banned on many company campuses, so you may want to check with your location before you light up.

Business Etiquette

When you’re meeting others on business, expect meetings throughout the working hours. Both breakfast and dinner meetings are not uncommon. If you do meet over a meal, see if your host orders alcohol before you choose to do the same. It’s not uncommon for some companies to consider alcohol during a business meal taboo.
