If there is one part of this city that has improved by leaps and bounds over the past few years, it is the shopping. Orlando had the reputation of being the ultimate bargain hunter’s destination, which isn’t a bad thing, but if you wanted a Tiffany broach or something from Neiman Marcus, well, you simply couldn’t get it in the city. Now, with the beautiful new Mall at Millenia, located just off Conroy Road, around the corner from Universal Studios, you can choose from some of the best names in all of fashion. The beautiful Florida Mall also offers many shopping choices and is one of the largest malls in the state.

There are still many amazing outlet malls throughout Orlando to enjoy. One of the biggest is the Orlando Premium Outlets, located just off of Highway 535 (the last exit westbound on I-4 before Disney) This outlet mall is so massive, you can easily see it from the highway, so you should have no trouble finding it. There is a second massive outlet mall over by International Drive, as well. Prime Outlets International is located at one end of I-Drive, closest to Universal.

If you are ready to step away from the band names and explore a little of what Orlando has to offer, head to Little Saigon, an area on Colonial Drive, just outside of downtown. This part of the city features many small shops that stock unique and one of a kind items from China, Japan and other Asian countries.

Like most cities, Orlando has an antiquing district. Ivanhoe Row, located on the quiet shores of Lake Ivanhoe on North Orange Ave, is dotted with beautiful and charming antique stores. This is a great place to get away from the tourist hordes for the day, but if it is summer, remember to wear a hat and bring water because it gets very warm out there.

Not surprisingly, some of the best shopping in the city is located inside of and just outside of the theme parks. Downtown Disney was once known as the Disney Marketplace and is now a shopping and eating destination. You’ll find everything from A Harley Davidson store, character themed shopping and skateboarding stores. Not to be outdone, Universal has their own version known as CityWalk. What puts CityWalk a step ahead of Disney is the fact that it is located just outside both theme parks, while Downtown Disney isn’t anywhere near anything else. CityWalk features a huge NBA themed store, a NASCAR store as well as many other shopping and dining destinations. Both of these spots are worth a walk around, even if you limit your purchases to a keychain. These spots do tend to be a bit packed with tourists, but there are fewer kids at this location since these areas are devoid of rides.

Tax Refunds

While there isn’t a VAT in the US, you may want to check with your embassy before you come. Moreover, you can save some cash if you ask to have your item shipped back home as some retailers will waive the state taxes if they know you’re not from Florida. The airport also features a number of duty-free shops. Taxes are included in all of your purchases. The sales tax rate in Orlando is 8.25%, and it will be levied on most purchases. Items like groceries, however, are excluded.
