Orlando - Business Tips

There are only a handful of spots in the United States that count on convention business quite like Orlando. The incredibly massive Orange County Convention Center is the second largest in terms of space offered in the country, second only to the center in Chicago. At any given time, the convention center is playing host to a half dozen major conventions at once.

Orlando is also becoming an economy powered by technology jobs, entertainment jobs and banks. At one point, every skyscraper in the Orlando skyline was owned by a bank. With the presence of Universal Studios, Disney Studios and high end animation schools like Full Sail, Orlando has long been known as Hollywood East, and many specials, shows and productions are made here throughout the year. Electronic Arts, one of the largest video game makers in the world has a major studio in Orlando responsible for such titles as the Madden franchise, among others.

The University of Central Florida is the second largest school in the state and in the top five in the nation. It is best known for having an excellent school of communications, computer science and a new law school that will be accepting students in the near future. The university is located on the eastern side of the city, so it isn’t exactly convenient to get to if you are staying by Disney but you can take I-4 and the East-West Expressway to get there or if you are staying in Kissimmee, consider using the Central Florida Greenway. The university is also home to the Central Florida Knights athletic program. The division 1 football team plays their home games on campus from late August until the end of November or the beginning of December.

Orlando Dress Code

Dress code in Orlando is tailored to the climate. In the summer months, formal clothing should be smart but light - favour especially cotton and natural fabrics to help counter the hot and humid conditions. Winter clothing is the standard business suit and tie, for example.

Greeting Someone in Orlando

Most people address each other by their first names and greet each other with a handshake. On some occasions, such as business meetings and formal functions, it is expected to use a person's title and last name.

Orlando Business Hours and Banking

Business hours in Orlando, Florida vary from one industry and sector to another but in general, most office environments operate between 09.00 and 17.30, Monday to Friday. As for banks, they tend to be open between 09.00 and 15.00, Monday to Friday.

Orlando Smoking

Smoking is the subject of much controversy in the United States. Smokers should definitely exercise discretion and sensitivity when choosing to smoke, as many Americans cannot tolerate people smoking in front of them. The best advice is to only smoke in Orlando when in like-minded company.

Tipping Advice

It is legal in the state of Florida for workers who collect tips to be paid under $4 an hour, so in most cases, once taxes have been taken out of a person’s check, they are left with nothing but what you give them. Generally speaking, you want to tip 15 percent for a good meal, 20 percent if the service was excellent. Make sure you tip those that clean your room a dollar per day or maybe a bit more if you have lots of special requests. If you’ve come to Orlando to play golf, be generous with your caddy. It is very likely hot outside and they have worked very hard to make this round of golf memorable for you.
