The major airport is Orlando International Airport (MCO), and it is fairly close to almost every Orlando destination. Nearly thirty-five million passengers pass through the airport each year. Additionally, travelers can fly into Orlando Executive Airport (ORL) and Orlando Sanford Airport (SFB). There are also a few private airstrips around the area. If you’d rather not fly, you can access Orlando by train, bus, or car.

Orlando Airport Information

Orlando International Airport (MCO)

There can be no denying that Orlando International Airport is one of the most beautiful airports in the country and if you believe in any of the industry awards that this airport proudly displays, it is one of the best thought of by flyers everywhere. Finding an inexpensive flight to Orlando shouldn’t be a problem as just about every major airline makes stops in the city. Orlando is truly the vacation capital of North America and there are over 60 different airlines and charters that service MCO.

Finding your way around MCO is simple. The airport is divided into two main sections: terminal A and terminal B. Both terminals feature domestic and international flights, so the terminal you end up using will depend on your airline. Mornings are the busiest time, but since this airport is such a focal point for the rest of the country, the security lines move at a reasonable rate and you shouldn’t be delayed assuming you allowed about two hours before your flight takes off. Delays are only really common during the afternoon hours in the summer, late spring and early fall when thunderstorms are a common occurrence. Even in these circumstances, the delay should only be about 20-30 minutes as the storms pass by.

There is plenty to see and do at MCO if you have arrived a bit early for your flight and you want to walk around. All of the theme parks are represented with a number of different shops. In fact, you could purchase as many souvenirs as you like without ever nearing one of the theme parks. There is even a major hotel, a beautiful Hyatt Regency, located inside MCO as well as a dozen and a half additional hotels located right next to the airport. It isn’t really advisable to stay by the airport during your vacation. You likely won’t get a free shuttle to the theme parks, and you will only save a few dollars per night compared to what you would pay in Kissimmee or by Universal. Overall, Orlando International is just like most other airports, but it is clean, well run and has plenty of amenities if you find yourself delayed for any length of time.

Other Orlando Airports

There are two other airports that service the Orlando Area. Both, however, are fairly small and may not offer you the level of service OIA does. Orlando Executive Airport is close to the downtown area, but wholly unserved by commercial companies. Orlando Sanford Airport is about thirty miles from OIA, and just about an hour from the Walt Disney World Resort. The Sanford airport is tiny and used mostly by charter airlines and small, no frills airlines that want to avoid the fees laid out by big airports, but with its location just off of I-4, it can be a good alternative to MCO, but it is quite a ways from the Universal area and even farther from Disney, so you could be looking at a $75-$100 cab ride if you don’t rent a car.

Flying into Daytona or Tampa is also an option, but in this case, renting a car would be absolutely mandatory, and most likely not worth it when you factor in gas costs and sitting in traffic.

Travelling to Orlando by Rail

In the days following 9-11, Amtrak recorded record ridership throughout most of the country, but especially to Orlando. The Amtrak station in the city is located near downtown, which isn’t exactly the best location if you are headed to the theme parks, but if your vacation is looking to take on more of a Florida flavor, it can be a great way to escape the airport and see most of the eastern seaboard. If you live anywhere along the east coast, there are two trains per day leaving New York City and Miami that stop in Orlando. There are also train stops in Winter Park and Kissimmee if you don’t want to stay downtown. If you live out west, there is a train from Los Angeles that hits Orlando three times a week. If you want to bring your car with you from home but you don’t want to have to drive all those miles, Amtrak also offers the Auto Train, that allows you to bring your car with you. This train runs between Virginia and Orlando and will get you to where you want to go in less than 24 hours. Thankfully, the price of train travel is still somewhat affordable to use and if you can spring for a sleeper (meals included) it makes the value even more impressive.

Travelling to Orlando by Road

Driving to Orlando is still the most common way in which people visit this area. I-95 runs the entire length of the east coast and once you hit Daytona, you can easily switch off on to I-4 and head directly to Orlando. If you are coming from the west, you will want to hop on I-75 or I-10 and head south and east towards Florida. Most of the highways in and around Orlando are free, with the exception of the Central Florida Greenway and the Martin Andersen Beachline Expressway (formally known as the Bee-line) are pay highways. If this is your first time to Orlando, you will likely end up on the Bee-Line on your way from Orlando International Airport to your hotel. More experienced visitors know how to get to Interstate 4 without having to pay the toll on the Bee-Line, but don’t worry, the toll is very small and you’ll be on I-4 in no time flat. It is highly recommended that you bring a map with you of the area if you plan on doing any kind of driving at all. The more you can stick to surface roads, the better off you’ll be.
