Expect plenty of diversity when you decide to hit the shops in the city. You can find little tourist trinkets just about everywhere, but for a more serious shopper, there is plenty more to be had. Whether you’re in search for something with a bit of ethnic flavor, quaint little knickknacks to adorn your home, or just a little casual clothes shopping, you’re bound to find it on the streets of DC. With a bit of research, a map in hand, and a list of places you want to visit, you’ll have your arms full of shopping bags in no time.
The quickest shopping spots are around the Mall – simple souvenirs for family and friends or yourself. Checking out the shops within certain buildings, such as the Smithsonian, will lead you to items that are a little more upscale. You can take home a little piece of Washington, whether it’s art or something as simple as a postcard.
If your interest lies in books, visit the Dupont Circle for several different vendors. Kramerbooks and Lambda Rising house a comfortable number for you to browse through, and when you’ve finished those stores, feel free to visit an art gallery for a little something different. Sometimes you can find a diamond in the rough in used book stores. Check out Second Story Books. You may even find a good piece of music as you peruse. If you want something a little different, visit the leading carrier of scientific, medical, and technical books: Reiter's Scientific & Professional Books. Indulge in their brilliant collection while soaking up the atmosphere; Reiter’s is the oldest bookstore in DC and is visited by dozens of scientists and various scholars each month to see what they have in store.
Traveling to the outskirts of Washington DC will showcase an even wider selection of shops. The Chevy Chase shopping district offers upscale fashion in chic stores, located along the border of DC and Maryland. Familiar names such as Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales call this place home, but for those who have never shopped at Saks Fifth Avenue, Gucci, Dior, or Versace can stroll into one for the first time and examine their finery. When you finish your shopping, you can move on to one of the many day spas located in the same area to kick back and relax, unwinding after a long day or week of sightseeing and traveling.
No great city would be complete without a dizzying collection of eclectic and vintage shops to provide customers with a look at unique items and distinctive styles. Boutique stores, vintage clothing sellers, home furnishing shops, and antique dealers have made their home all along the U Street corridor, providing for a colorful day of actual shopping or just casual window shopping. Take a day to amble up and down the street and pop in and out of shops – you never know what you might find within one of them.
Most shops are open 9:00-5:00 Monday through Saturday, and often on Sunday as well, though some places may have shorter hours on Sundays.
