Once a retreat for Hollywood stars, the breath-taking beauty of its position beneath Mount Jacinto (10,831 feet / 3,250 meters) and pleasant climate have made Palm Springs a popular year-round destination. Careful town planning has restricted building heights to thirty feet (10 meters), prohibited flashing, moving and neon signs and requires 50 per cent of land to be left as open space with palm trees and desert vegetation to preserve a rural feeling along-side urban growth. There are over 50 golf courses and 350 tennis courts in the Palm Springs area, with fishing, horseriding and bicycling also available. Palm Canyon Drive, one of the town's main palm-lined thoroughfares, is home to a great many quality boutiques and galleries.
