Flights
Los Angeles’s main airport is LAX (Los Angeles International Airport), which is the seventh busiest airport in the world. Sixty-one million people travel through this airport each year. In addition, air travelers can fly into Ontario International, Bob Hope, John Wayne, and Long Beach Municipal Airports. There are also numerous private airstrips. Most travelers, though, come in through LAX. LA is also accessible by Amtrak rail service, Greyhound bus, and of course, car.Approximate flight times to Los Angeles: from New York 5 hours 45 minutes; from Toronto 5 hours 15 minutes; from London 11 hours 5 minutes; 13 hours 33 minutes (not including layovers).
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
LAX is the major airport for Southern California, handling 70 percent of passengers, 75 of cargo, and 95 percent of international passengers coming to the area. A mammoth airport, LAX has nine terminals. Free shuttle buses run passengers between terminals, including shuttles with handicap access and TDDs (telecommunication device for the deaf) are available in every terminal. LAX has restaurants, shops, ATMs, baggage storage, and money exchanging services.
At LAX, you will find most 40 car rental companies. The following companies can pick up and drop off customers from airline terminals on the Lower/Arrival level islands by the baggage claim area via free shuttles: Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Fox, Payless, National, and Thrifty. Those using other rental companies use the Ground Transportation Telephone Boards in the baggage claim area to arrange for a pick-up. A free LAX shuttle meets their rental company shuttle.
LAX has 32,000 parking spaces, including budget long-term parking and valet parking. Parking for disabled people is available, and free shuttles run to and from parking lots to terminals frequently.
Other LA Airports
LA has six major airports. Depending on your destination, choosing a flight through another airport may save you time and aggravation. For example, if you are going to Disneyland or Orange County, flying into John Wayne Airport will save you from having to drive through a lot of LA traffic or pay expensive cab fares. The Bob Hope Airport in Burbank is close to attractions in LA, and likewise, may save you some time.
Getting Into Los Angeles from the Airport
Travelling From LAX:
Taxis: Taxis from LAX can be expensive. Fares are as follows and includes all passengers:
$2.85 for the first 1/9 mile
$2.70 for each additional mile, or $.30 for 1/9 mile
$.30 for every 37 seconds of wait time, or $29.19
$46.50 flat rate for trips between LAX and Downtown
$2.50 surcharge on trips starting at LAX
$15.00 minimum fare for trips starting at LAX (plus the $2.50 surcharge
Shared Ride Services: Services, such as SuperShuttle and Prime Time Shuttle, offer shared rides to and from LAX to city hotspots. Book ahead of time and get some good discounts.
Airport FlyAway Buses: runs between LAX and Downtown’s Union Station. The seats are large enough to accommodate luggage, and at $5 to $6, this may be the least expensive option for getting into LA or back to LAX. A 45 minute trip Downtown also makes it the fastest option as well.
Car: From the airport, you have your choice of 40 rental companies, all of which are accessible by free shuttles. Leaving LAX, take Sepulveda Boulevard north to Pacific Coast Highway if you want to go to Santa Monica, Venice, and Malibu. Take Century Boulevard to 405 north and exit on Santa Monica Boulevard East to get to Beverly Hills or Hollywood. To get Downtown or to Pasadena, take Sepulveda Boulevard south to 105 East to 110 North.
Travelling From Burbank/Bob Hope Airport:
Trains and Shuttles: There is an Amtrack/MetroLink station close to the main terminal, which travelers can reach by walking or using the free shuttle. MTA buses and Burbank Bus run from the airport to Downtown Burbank and connects to the Metro Red Line in North Hollywood.
Airport FlyAway Buses: Like the Airport FlyAway buses that run from LAX to Union Station, these buses also provide transportation from Bob Hope. SuperShuttle, Prime Time, and Road Runner offer FlyAway services for Burbank.
Car: Major car rental companies, Alamo, Avis, Hertz, and National have services in the terminals, while Budget, Advantage, Enterprise, AllRite, Rent4Less, and Discovery have services outside of the airport. Off-site companies have complementary shuttles to and from their terminals.
Taxi: Burbank is serviced by City Cab and Yellow Cab. Plan on calling for a cab at the airport. Fares run from around $25 to $35 to Hollywood, Downtown, and Beverly Hills.
Travelling to Los Angeles by Train:
Visitors can access Los Angeles by train as well. There is an Amtrak station at Union Station in Downtown. From here, you can use the Metro Rail’s Red Line and Gold Line or get a taxi at the west exit. Union Station is a short distance to the Civic Center, El Pueblo, Chinatown, and Little Tokyo. Amtrak runs the following routes in Los Angeles from Union Station:
Coast Starlight: daily between LA and Seattle, via Portland, San Francisco Bay, and a stop in the San Fernando Valley.
Pacific Surfliner: several daily trains between San Diego and LA. Some trains go north to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. More local stops than the Coast Starlight.
Southwest Chief: with local stops south of Downtown and east into Inland Empire.
Sunset Limited: with local stops east of Downtown and into Island Empire.
You can also take trains from the Burbank Amtrak station; here you can connect to MetroLink, buses, and car rental companies. In addition, this station is close to many area attractions.
Travelling to Los Angeles by Road:
Greyhound buses have terminals throughout Los Angeles. These are located at:
1716 East 7th Street: While this will get you into the city and connected with the Metro bus line, it is in the Skid-Row District, which is a notoriously rough neighborhood. If you can, stop at another terminal.
11239 Magnolia Boulevard, North Hollywood: This terminal is a quarter mile south of the Metro Red Line North Hollywood Station.
1715 North Cahuenga Boulevard, Hollywood: This stop is a quarter mile west of the Metro Red Line Hollywood/Vine station.
3501 North Santa Anita Avenue, El Monte: Here are you will Metro lines, a Foothill Transit bus station, and express buses to Downtown.
1241 South Soto Street, East Los Angeles: Multiple lines run Downtown
305 North Tamarind Avenue, Compton: The Metro Blue Line is across the street.
