Getting Around (Intro)

As well as Dubai International Airport, there are other methods of transport into Dubai. The UAE road network is inconsistent but is reasonable into Dubai city centre. Rail is also an option.

Arriving by Air
Dubai International Airport is a busy airport that serves Dubai with both international and domestic air services. Buses run between Dubai International Airport and Deira bus station every 15 to 20 minutes. The most popular way to get into, out of and around Dubai is by Dubai Transport taxis. These are metered and can be hailed from most places, with the added benefit that most drivers know their way around between various districts.

Getting Around Dubai
Dubai has fairly good bus, minibus and taxi services. If you plan to stay for some time, make sure you have access to a vehicle, as there isn't a reliable public transport system beyond the city. Car hire is not too expensive, the roads are in good condition, but the rules of the road are not always carefully observed. Be very careful until you are used to it and be aware that roundabouts are particularly hazardous, as are wandering camels. If you intend to hire a car, bring your credit card and a copy of your passport. All accidents, regardless of how minor they may be, must be reported to the police.

Local buses run from the Deira bus station, near the Gold Souq, and the Bur Dubai station on Al-Ghubaiba Rd. Monthly bus passes, known as taufeer, get you unlimited travel on one or the other side of Dubai Creek or, more expensively, throughout the city.

The souqs, museums and entrancing architecture of old Dubai are best seen on foot. Water taxis (abra) cross Dubai Creek from early morning until around midnight, and are a great way to see the waterfront.

Car Rental

Car hire is not too expensive, the roads are in good condition, but the rules of the road are not always carefully observed. Be very careful until you are used to it and be aware that roundabouts are particularly hazardous, as are wandering camels. Public Transport

Bus
Local buses operate out of stations in Deira and Bur Dubai. The Deira bus station is off Al-Khor St, near the intersection with Al-Soor St. There is also the Bur Dubai bus station on Al-Ghubaiba Rd. Numbers and routes are posted on the buses in English as well as Arabic. Free route maps are available at both bus stations. People are generally friendly and helpful - if you get confused, you can tell a passer-by or fellow commuter where you want to go and they will point you to the right bus. The bus driver will be happy to let you know when to get off.

Water Taxi
Abras run from early morning until about midnight along two routes: between Bur Dubai Abra Dock and Deira Old Souq Abra Dock; and between Dubai Old Souq Abra Dock and Sabkha Abra Dock. The fare is collected once you are out on the water.

Taxi
Dubai has a large metered taxi fleet, making it easy to hail a taxi from anywhere on the road. You can also book a taxi through Dubai Transport (tel: 208 0808).
