Glasgow has undergone a culinary renaissance and the last few years has seen a proliferation of top notch restaurants combining the finest of cuisine with all the style and cool you'd expect from this most design-conscious of cities. With celebrity chefs Nick Nairn and Gordon Ramsay now competing for the top slot in the city, dining out in Glasgow has become a serious business. There are plenty of places where being seen is nearly as important as the food - although Glaswegians won't put up with being ripped off, so you nearly always get good value for money.

Glasgow has always boasted a wide selection of ethnic eateries, particularly Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants, and these have been joined by a growing number of other cuisines from around the globe. You can eat almost any kind of food here from Australian to Yugoslavian. Scottish cuisine is also well represented, reflecting the growing trend of marrying traditional Scottish ingredients with continental and international flavours and styles. Meats like venison, pheasant, lamb and beef are often on the menu, and haggis may feature too - often as a starter so as not to frighten the uninitiated. Fresh local fish is also widely available, sometimes fashionably seared, sometimes served in an unusual sauce, and sometimes just fried with big fat chips. Look out for salmon, halibut, scallops, langoustines, mackerel and Loch Fyne kippers.

Vegetarians are also well catered for. Although there aren't too many exclusively vegetarian or vegan restaurants, most places now offer substantial and imaginative vegetarian menus.

The city's many bistros and brasseries feature wide-ranging menus incorporating everything from Mediterranean cooking to Pacific Rim specialities. They also tend to be more lively and informal places to eat, as well as offering good value for money - nd this is one of the city's great strengths. Compared to other cities (London for example), you can eat well and in some style without breaking the bank.
