Leipzig is the birthplace of Wagner and favourite city of the poet Goethe, who studied at its fourteenth-century university and who referred to Leipzig as his 'Little Paris'. Leipzig was also home to Bach and Mendelssohn. Music and the arts feature prominently in this grand and culturally rich city. The Gewandhaus Orchestra is over 250 years old and the city's St Thomas Church was where Martin Luther preached in 1539; Bach was its cantor for 27 years and is buried here.
