"My Leipzig is what I like!" is Johann Wolfgang Goethe's famous quote about the ancient and vibrant Saxon city he thought of as his ‘Little Paris'. The history of Leipzig is intertwined with that of many great names who have shaped the cultural and political landscape of the last half-millennium. It was the birthplace of Wagner; Mendelssohn was director of music and Bach was choirmaster at the city's St. Thomas' Church. It has over 300 years of opera tradition and the world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra is more than 250 years old. Goethe studied at the fourteenth-century university, as did Lessing and Jean-Paul Sartre. Martin Luther stayed here and Lenin printed the first issues of his Marxist newspaper in the city. Today Leipzig is Germany's second largest banking metropolis at the hub of East-West trade with a well-earned reputation for first rate international trade fairs. Home to nearly forty publishing houses, the city is also a rapidly developing media centre.
