A highly cultural city, Hamburg has a cultural tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages. World-famous composers, such as Händel and Mahler, have left their marks on Hanseatic cultural history. Gustav Gründgens made theatrical history here with his legendary production of "Faust" and the Beatles made their debut at the Star Club.

The Hamburg State Opera was founded in 1678 and has a world-famous reputation. Mozart and Verdi as well as contemporary works are performed here plus exciting ballet performances. The theatre scene is no less active with the high point of dramatic arts performed at the renowned Deutsche Schauspielhaus and in the only slightly less famous Thalia Theatre. Comedy can be seen at the Ohnsorg Theater and in the Winterhuder Fährhaus.

Hamburg Dining

Hamburg boasts an impressive selection of restaurants. Being a bustling international seaport, local tastes have widened and developed to encompass a wide range of foods. Cuisine ranges from Italian pasta to the American steakhouse and Japanese sushi; however some of the best food to be had is of locally caught origin. Fish, freshly caught, is a must-try delicacy, with dishes such as Aalsuppe (eel soup) and Labskaus (stew made with meat, potatoes and herring) being especially popular.

In restaurants, round the bill up to the nearest DEM as there will generally already be a 10 percent service charge included. Hotels tend to add a service charge to their bills.
