Marseille Tipping Advice
Service charges are included on all restaurant bills in Marseille at a cost of between 10 and 15 percent. However, it is fair to add a little more if the meal and service has been exceptional. Taxi drivers expect small tips of between 5 and 10 percent of the fare. Porters, doormen and room service staff in Marseille can be offered a gratuity of approximately 10 to 20 FRF.
When to Visit - Arts and Events
Summer is the most usual time to visit the south of France, but many choose to visit in winter, spring or fall as the climate of Provence is, famously, attractive throughout the year.
Bastille Day is France's national holiday and the Marseillaise generally devote two days to its celebration on the 13th and 14th of July. For a week on either side (more or less) the city celebrates its own festival, hosting performances of contemporary dance, music of many kinds, and classic films.
Marseilles has some intriguing museums and galleries. The Museum of Fine Art (Musee de Beaux Arts), the Jardins des Vestiges and the Museum of the Roman Docks, which includes a well-preserved ancient ship, will all repay a visit.
Marseille Dining
The cuisine of France is famous, and the cooking of bustling Marseilles is a well-known part of it. The city's two signature dishes are bouillabaisse, a fish stew flavored by saffron and a wealth of other ingredients, and bourride, a fish stew flavoured with garlic mayonnaise. Book upon book has dealt with the cuisine of the sunny region of Provence, and its largest city offers restaurants and cafes that entice and entertain.
