Culturally rich, the Lake District has its fair share of museums, Cistercian monasteries, parks, historic buildings and stately homes with fabulous gardens. Lake Windermere is England's largest lake and stretches from Waterhead, near Ambleside to Lakeside. Nearby, Coniston Water is the site where Donald Campbell broke the World Water Speed Record in 1955 and where he tragically died attempting to regain his record eleven years later in his boat 'Bluebird'. An inspiration to many writers, this area boasts such well-known authors as Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome, the author of 'Swallows and Amazons' and of course the poet William Wordsworth.
