Kuala Lumpur Transpotation
The vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur boasts an efficient transport network that enables visitors to move around conveniently and economically.
Arriving by Air
The ultra-modern Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is 75 kilometres (47 miles) south of the city centre at Sepang. This large, modern facility boasts an updated check-in facility, baggage handling, security procedures, two hotels, and shuttle bus services into the capital. A small number of domestic carriers fly out of the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport at Subang.
From Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the speedy KLIA Ekspres train will whisk you to Kuala Lumpur Sentral (Central Station) downtown in 28 minutes. Taxis from the airport operate on a fixed-price coupon system and coupons are available in the Arrival Hall.
In addition to international flights, an increasing number of domestic carriers - Pelangu Air, Berjaya Air and Mofaz Air - operate city routes to Kuala Terengganu, Pulau Tioman, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Pangkor, Taman Negara, Kuantan, Ipoh, Penang, Malacca and Pulau Langkawi.
Car
A luxurious limousine service can be reserved from a taxi hire counter located at the airport or at any one of the many star-rated Kuala Lumpur hotels.
Interstate taxis have proved to be one of the most inexpensive and practical modes of transportation in the city. A general taxi stand in Kuala Lumpur is located along Level 2 at the Pudu Raya Bus Terminal. Although these taxis are equipped with metres, fares are usually fixed according to the destination. Therefore, it is advisable to negotiate fees prior to travelling. A 50% surcharge is normally levied along with the fare when travelling between 12:00 am and 6:00 am. Traffic jams, especially during rush hour, are fairly common in Kuala Lumpur; this might make hailing for a taxicab difficult.
Buses
Malaysia maintains a highly reliable and extensive bus service network. Air-conditioned express buses and non air-conditioned regional buses can be boarded from Kuala Lumpur and will chauffeur passengers to many major towns across Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur’s main Puduraya Bus Station is located east of Chinatown. Buses from Puduraya travel nationwide counting Singapore and Thailand as well.
Rail
The Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) also known as Malayan Railways is the hub of Malaysia's national railway system and manages an extensive rail network that stretches across Malaysia. KTM offers a number of special packages for foreign visitors and KTM’s professional information officers located in the main hall will oblige in providing information on train schedules.
The KTM Railpass offers all the benefits of first-class travel at highly attractive rates. Railpass holders are allowed unlimited travel on any passenger train in Malaysia and Singapore for the duration of the railpass.
