When to Visit - Arts and Events
South Australia is known as the 'Festival State', and this is born out with occasions such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts during February and March and the Gourmet Weekend in the Clare Valley in May. Other festivals include the Fringe Festival and WOMADelaide, both festivals of arts and music.
Adelaide Dining
With more restaurants per person than any other Australian city, Adelaide has an extremely varied selection of cuisine, including Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Malaysian and vegetarian. Particularly popular is Pacific Rim 'fusion cuisine', with an emphasis on seafood dishes, as is traditional German cuisine; a legacy of the many German immigrants who arrived in the city during the last century. Cafe culture has grown considerably in the last few years and Rundle Street is famous for lively sidewalk cafes, coffee and wine bars. A productive wine region, the Adelaide Hills produces fine wines that include Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Adelaide Tipping Advice
In general, it is not customary to tip in Australia though this is now changing and 10% will sometimes be added to hotel bills. In some of the high-class restaurants it is usual to tip up to 10%, but on the whole, gratuity is at your own discretion.
