When to Visit - Arts and Events
To this day St. Louis retains its love affair with the Mississippi River and is justly famous for its waterfront. Here you can hear the very best of ragtime, blues and Dixieland jazz, all of which are also played and performed on a nightly basis in many of the city's bars, clubs and restaurants.
St. Louis Dining
It may be a quintessentially American city, but St Louis is thoroughly cosmopolitan and this is reflected in the variety of cuisine on offer. From elegant downtown restaurants to casual diners, serving traditional fare, you'll find just about anything and everything, somewhere in this town. The clubs and restaurants near the riverfront are always popular with jazz and ragtime music performed here every night. St. Louis' Hill neighborhood has an Italian restaurant on nearly every corner, while the Central West End, Laclede's Landing and Union Station are also renowned for a broad range of dining choices.
St. Louis Tipping Advice
Service charges in St. Louis restaurants are often not added to the bill, so tipping is recommended. Give anything from 10 percent where food and service has been acceptable, to 20 percent in cases where you've rated the meal as excellent. Tips in taxis should be paid along similar lines. The recommended rate for doormen, parking attendants and valets is one US dollar.
