Situated 80 miles (130 kilometres) southwest of London, on the extensive natural harbour of Southampton Water, Southampton is a booming city with a rich seafaring tradition. Once a busy haven for passenger liners (the Titanic set sail from Southampton), in recent years its old dockland area has undergone one of the biggest waterfront developments in the United Kingdom. The result, Ocean Village, includes a 500-berth marina, undercover shopping, a multiplex cinema and a selection of excellent restaurants. Despite heavy bombing during World War II, much of the old city has survived. Regular guided tours explore the city's heritage, the medieval town walls, the Tudor House and garden and the medieval Merchant's House (built in 1290) which has been expertly restored and authentically furnished. |
