Oklahoma's heritage means that many of the more well-known attractions and dining options in the city are based around the "cowboys and steak" theme. But there's much more to this city if that isn't what you're looking for.

The Arts District is packed with stunning collections, such as the world's largest display of Dale Chihuly sculptures, along with an arthouse, regular open air events and the beautiful Myriad Gardens, a park with a seven-storey botanical garden at its heart.

The Adventure District is packed with tourist attractions, including science, space and photography museums, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, a thoroughbred centre with racetrack and casino and the city zoo.

The city has a large Asian District, the downtown ex-warehouse district known as Bricktown has been renovated to offer a bustling nightlife and the Capitol Hill district blends government offices with the city's hispanic community. The Plaza Court district has just recently been renovated and offers rooftop music bars with fabulous views and a vivid mix of restaurants and bars.

As with any city of its size, there are shopping opportunities everywhere, with malls and well-known stores throughout the city. Try 50 Penn Place or Penn Square for centrally located major retailers. For something a little different, and specific to Oklahoma, try the Paseo Arts District, which is crammed with small designer boutiques, vintage outlets, flea markets, antique shops and art galleries.

Oklahoma's State Fair takes place in the capital's State Fair Park in early September.

Oklahoma's Will Rogers World Airport is undergoing a phased major expansion and enjoying the added destinations and airlines it can now accommodate. Located just a few miles southwest of the city, it is easily accessible, with a taxi to Downtown Oklahoma costing around $20, limousines start at $50 and shared shuttles average $17. Taxis or rental cars are highly recommended for travelling within Oklahoma, which is easy to navigate thanks to its grid layout.
