New York Dress Code
Business suits are expected, with a slightly more relaxed focus on Fridays. Generally, smart casual is recommended for all forms of social engagement in New York, with the exception of some restaurants where formal attire is required. As the weather is cold in the winter and hot in the summer, visitors are reminded to come suitably equipped. Hats, gloves, scarves and snow-proof footwear can be essential.
Greeting Someone in New York
For business purposes, a firm, friendly handshake and use of first names is the norm in New York. Americans are generally very friendly and hospitable. Similar behaviour from visitors will ensure social success.
New York Business Hours and Banking
As with all major cities, New York City's business hours vary from one industry and sector to another but in general, most office environments operate between 09:00 and 17:30, Monday to Friday. The majority of banks are open between 09:00 and 15:00, Monday to Friday, with some staying open to 17:30 or 18:00 one day a week. Some of the larger banks will probably also be open on Saturday mornings.
New York Smoking
An issue that is traditionally one of great controversy in New York, smokers are warned to be very careful when choosing a place to light up. Most public places have banned smoking altogether and the penalties can be severe.
