New York Airport Information
New York - John F Kennedy International Airport
John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is located in the south-eastern section of Queens County, New York City, on Jamaica Bay. It is 24 kilometres (15 miles) by highway from midtown Manhattan and will cost about USD 40.00 by taxi. Carey Transportation coaches leave every 20 minutes for midtown Manhattan, between 06:00 and 24:00.
Nine passenger terminals are located around JFK Airport's central terminal area. The terminals and corresponding parking lots are divided into four colour-coded sections: the green quadrant contains Terminals 1, 2 and 3; the blue quadrant Terminals 4E and 4W; the orange quadrant Terminals 5, 6 and 7; and the red quadrant Terminals 8 and 9. This information is also posted on large colour-coded signs on the approach to the central terminal area on both the Van Wyck and JFK Expressways.
There is a huge range of shops, restaurants, snack bars and service kiosks in each of the terminals at JFK Airport. Location maps are prominently displayed, and for those wishing to visit a business in another terminal, the red, white and blue bus service connects all of them. Be advised, however, that during peak afternoon hours a round trip can take up to an hour.
There are five major car rental companies operating at JFK Airport. The offices are located along the Van Wyck Expressway near the entrance to the airport. At each terminal's arrivals level (usually near the baggage carousel), there is either a rental car counter or courtesy telephone. Courtesy transport is available from each terminal to the rental car offices.
JFK Airport offers short-term central terminal area (CTA) parking and long-term parking.
New York - Newark Liberty International Airport
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is located in New Jersey, 26 kilometres (16 miles) from Manhattan. Taxis from Newark Airport are readily available but tend to be expensive because Newark is situated in the state of New Jersey, and passengers going into New York City are required to pay the round trip fare even if only travelling one way. An alternative is the Olympia Trails bus service that runs every 20 minutes between 06:15 and 24:00. This is probably the quickest, as well as being a fairly comfortable way to get into Manhattan, as there is a bus lane most of the way, resulting in an easier journey.
There are three terminals at Newark Airport: Terminal A, Terminal B and Terminal C. Each terminal has an upper departures level with facilities for airline ticketing; a lower arrivals level for airline baggage claim and ground transportation; and a ground level extending under the arrivals and departures roadways and the main building itself. Terminal A with 27 gates and Terminal B with 23 gates branch out to three circular, satellite aircraft gate buildings, designated A-1, A-2, A-3 and B-1, B-2, B-3 respectively. International arrival gates are located in the B2 and B3 satellites. Departing international flights may leave from Terminals A, B or C. The free AirTrain operates between the three terminals and runs every three and a half minutes between 05:00 and 24:00. Outside these hours, the AirTrain runs every 10 to 24 minutes.
All three terminals at Newark Airport boast a vast array of shops, services and places to eat and drink. Such facilities are spread fairly evenly between the terminals so the chances are that you will be able to find what you are looking for at your own terminal. If this is not the case, then the AirTrain is available for inter-terminal transportation.
There are seven car rental companies serving Newark Airport: Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz and National are all located within the airport, with Alamo and Enterprise to be found adjacent to the airport.
There are economy parking lots (G and H) located a couple of miles from the main terminal buildings. There are complimentary courtesy buses that transfer between parking lots G and H and Terminals A, B and C. Buses run every five minutes from 05:00 to 24:00 and every ten minutes from 24:00 to 05:00. Total travel time from lots G and H to the terminals is approximately 20 minutes, depending on traffic.
New York - LaGuardia Airport
LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is primarily responsible for flights within the United States, but also serves the greater New York area internationally. Located in the Borough of Queens, New York City, bordering on Flushing Bay and Bowery Bay, LaGuardia Airport is 13 kilometres (eight miles) from midtown Manhattan, and the journey by taxi is likely to cost around USD 25.00. Carey Transportation also operates bus services from LaGuardia Airport every 30 minutes, between 06:45 and 24:00.
LaGuardia Airport has four main terminal buildings: Terminals A, B, C and D are located in the Central Terminal Building (CTB). The US Airways Terminal and US Airways Shuttle are in the same building. Delta Shuttle is located by the Marine Air Terminal. The Delta Terminal is separate from the others and is located next to the US Airways Terminal.
There is a wide range of retail outlets and restaurants throughout LaGuardia Airport. The Central Terminal Building provides an array of choices when it comes to shopping or dining at LaGuardia and boasts the largest selection of all the terminals. The US Airways Terminal comes a close second to the CTB with stores such as Benjamin Books, Coffee Beanery, Tie Rack, Bodyography and Sunglass Hut. The other terminals also provide a slightly smaller selection of cafes, gift shops and news-stands. However, free inter-terminal connection buses are available roughly every 15 minutes for a large part of the day for those interested in seeing what the whole airport has to offer.
LaGuardia Airport is served by five major car rental firms. Connected to all of the airport terminals by frequent free shuttle buses, the car rental companies have pickup areas in each terminal. Each of these companies provides either a car rental booth or courtesy car rental telephone, which can be found in all arrivals areas.
LaGuardia Airport offers daily parking near all terminals and long-term, reduced-rate parking near the Central Terminal Building for vehicles staying longer than 24 hours. Disabled-passenger parking is offered in each lot. Metered parking is located in lot 6 at the Marine Air Terminal. Signs to LaGuardia Airport parking facilities have been colour-coded in order to show their proximity to each terminal: US Airways is red; Delta is orange; Delta Shuttle is blue; and the Central Terminal Building is green.
