When to Visit - Arts and Events

Summertime is when the living is easy in Milwaukee, and its nationally renowned Summerfest, a giant music festival, is an event that attracts thousands of visitors. Clowns, horses, elephants and circus wagons make up July's notable Great Circus Parade.

In June, July and August the newly constructed RiverWalk springs to life and Miller Park, the stadium of the Milwaukee Brewers, plays host to major league baseball.

Wintertime brings low temperatures and, usually, snow. Hunkered down, the city still aims to please. Museums and art galleries stimulate imaginations. Theatres and concert halls offer a range of high class dramatic and musical experiences.

Milwaukee Tipping Advice

In Milwaukee, as in the rest of the United States, service personnel rely on tips to supplement their wages. For waiters, bartenders, taxi drivers or similar, 15 per cent is standard. Baggage handlers at hotels and airports should be given one USD per bag and a hotel doorman, 50 cents to one USD for loading or unloading luggage or other similar service. Tipping is not expected in fast-food restaurants or cinemas.

Milwaukee Dining

Milwaukee's restaurateurs take pleasure in serving locals and visitors fine food cooked in a wide range of different styles, from French to Thai, from Polish to Pacific Rim. The city's particular style is not so highfaluting. German heritage has given it a tradition of producing some of the best grilled sausages in the country - here known as "brats" - and these are tasted and admired by a huge number of visitors. Nor should the visitor avoid sampling Milwaukee's other famous product: beer. Fine examples are produced not only by the major breweries but also by numerous micro breweries.
