Memphis Transportation
Memphis is easy to reach by road and rail from the Tenessee area and the rest of the United States. In addition, there is a major airport that seves the city although like all airports in North America, Memphis International Airport has stepped up its security operations. Travelers, therefore, should be patient and allow plenty of time when arriving or leaving.
Arriving by Air
Memphis is served by the Memphis International Airport, which is approximately 11 miles (17 kilometers) south of the downtown area. A good number of both domestic and international carriers fly to Memphis.
Arriving by Car
Memphis is a major crossroads in the American south. The main routes into Memphis include the interstates I-40 and I-55. Out of Memphis, the I-40 goes west to Little Rock (Arkansas) and east to Nashville; the I-55 runs north to St Louis and south to Jackson. If driving from Memphis International Airport, the I-240 goes directly into the central Memphis downtown area.
Getting Around Memphis
The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) provides a bus service to the downtown area, route number 7, plus a comprehensive service throughout the city. Trolley buses also operate in the city center and are a pleasant means of seeing the sights.
