Frankfurters are not a local speciality despite Mainz's proximity to Frankfurt. What you are more likely to find instead is rippchen mit kraut (pork chop and sauerkraut) with gruene sosse (green sauce which is a mayonnaise base with herbs, that include cress, chives, sorrel and parsley).The proximity of the vineyards from the Rheingau and Rheinterrasse makes Mainz a wine city par excellence. In the Altstaad (Old Town), you'll come across many Weinstuben (wine bars) offering impressive wine lists.

Mainz Tipping Advice

In restaurants, round the bill up to the nearest Euro as there will generally already be a 10 percent service charge included. Hotels tend to add a service charge to their bills.
