And it is a joy to stumble on oases of tranquility and elegance in the beautiful squares and gardens just a short walk from the heartland of London's buzzing West End.
Time waits for no one and the adage is no more applicable than to London – it’s a place with an overall sense of creativity and urgency. Europe’s most thrilling capital offers entertainment on a major scale, seriously avant-garde art, fashion and design, and a famously revived dining scene. Continental Europe has its sophisticated cafés and brasseries whilst Britain is still very much rooted in the tradition of the pub, in all its different forms: it is still possible to enjoy a cosy, fireside pint in a London pub though the number of more boisterous modern bars is undoubtedly growing. Pubs remain focal points for many communities and are great places to socialise.
London is a city overflowing with rich traditions that make it instantly recognisable from many aspects. It has the most polite and competent taxi drivers in the world, driving unmistakable black London cabs. There are the mysterious, silent soldiers of Buckingham Palace with their tall, bearskin hats and unwavering concentration. Brilliant street musicians in Covent Garden and famous markets in Camden, Brixton and Petticoat Lane bring the streets alive.
