Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan, is located in the north-east of the country, an area that was traditionally part of the Pakistan Punjab area. Set against the backdrop of Margalla Hills, Islamabad affords an almost picture-postcard ambience that is all too rare in the region. It is lush green, quaint, open and manages to combine Islamic architecture and western influence effortlessly.

Islamabad is also a young city, founded in the 1960s after a need for a modern capital was identified. Led by renowned Greek urban planner, Constantinos A. Doxiadis, whose vision for a city of open spaces and greenery continues to mould the city even today, Islamabad’s relative infancy doesn’t take anything away from its obvious magnetism in the eyes of tourists. From popular Islamabad attractions, fascinating eating places, to star-class Islamabad hotels, the city offers it all.

After it was opened, Islamabad’s growth was slow, owing mainly to the long relocation process of the government. During the 1990s, the city began to appeal to more Pakistanis as investments grew and infrastructure improved dramatically. Today, Islamabad is a city that is well on its way to becoming one of Asia’s foremost metropolises.

True to Doxiadis’ vision, Islamabad is shaping up to be a city that revels in nature. No fewer than three natural parks, including the renowned Shakarparian Hills, invite residents and visitors alike to be one with nature. The views from Shakarparian Hills of the nearby Rawal Lake and the cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad will be engraved in the minds of visitors for a long time.
