This neo-classical landmark, designed by Manuel Tolsa, originally served as an orphanage from 1810 until 1979, after which the building became a cultural venue and an art school. The walls and dome of the main chapel are adorned with a series of murals painted by Jose Clemente Orozco, including his renowned work, 'The Man of Fire'. The cultural center also hosts permanent and visiting art exhibitions.

This museum's extensive collection portrays the history of Western Mexico from prehistoric times to the present day. The first floor houses exhibits of ancient fossils, artifacts from indigenous cultures and many photographs and maps revealing the area's rich past. The second floor displays the history of the Mexican Revolution, as well as paintings by European and Mexican artists.

This magnificently ornate theater, designed by Jacobo Galvez, is a masterpiece. The inside is lavishly adorned with red and gold balconies and above is a dome decorated with a depiction of Dante's Divine Comedy. The Philharmonic Orchestra of Jalisco and the Folkloric Ballet of the University of Guadalajara often put on performances in this beautiful theater.

This museum displays an impressive collection of 20th-century drawings and paintings. Amongst this extraordinary collection there are works by both national and international artists, including a mural by José Clemente Orozco. Behind the museum is the Templo Expatorio, an imposing Gothic church.


Catedral

Having taken fifty-seven years to build it was dedicated to the 'Assumption' in 1618. In 1750 its façade was destroyed by an earthquake, which was later rebuilt. An intriguing combination of Baroque, Churrigueresque and neo-classical architectural styles, the cathedral is the focal point of central Guadalajara. The interior is a showcase of 16th to 18th-century Spanish art and includes the famous 17th-century painting by Bartolome Esteban Murillo, 'The Assumption of the Virgin', which hangs in the sacristy.
