Düsseldorf Dining
Düsseldorf offers a wide range of dining places. Smart restaurants serve international, Japanese, European and German cuisine. Traditional Düsseldorf bars include many atmospheric watering holes that brew their versions of the local Altbier, which is bitter, strong, dark-brown and very tasty.
Local specialities include Rhenish sauerbraten (pickled beef) and HalverHahn (cheese and ryebread with carroway seeds and onions). Goose, pork and buckwheat pancakes feature on many menus.
The Old Town or Altstadt has the highest concentration of restaurants and bars; other neighborhoods also offer good choices for eating and drinking.
When to Visit - Arts and Events
In late February/early March the carnival attracts a million people to enjoy a mixture of customary parades, artistic events and that most traditional of Düsseldorf pastimes - socializing over a glass of the famous local beer. The Rose Day parade is the climax of festivities.
All through the year the city hosts some of the biggest and most important trade shows in Europe, the most noted being its fashion fairs or Modemessen.
Art galleries, opera houses and a host of theatres offer a wide choice of programming.
Düsseldorf Tipping Advice
There will be a service charge for hotel bills. In the case of taxis, hairdressers, doormen and others who provide a service a tip is usually expected. In restaurants the bill is usually rounded up to the nearest Deutchsmark and a ten percent service charge will already be included.
