When to Visit - Arts and Events
Moroccan music has to be experienced. It is a unique blend of Spanish classical music and modern styles from the West and elsewhere with the original Arab-African local style. However, women (and men!) should bear in mind that Islam is the predominant religion here and in accordance with this, should try and keep dance as modest as possible.
Casablanca Dining
A sumptuous mixture of tastes, colours and aromas, Moroccan cooking is characterised by rich spices. Couscous - granular semolina - is the country's staple food and is often cooked with egg, chicken, lamb and vegetables. A rich and fragrant tajine stew of lamb, vegetables, peppers and spices, cooked slowly with olive oil in a conical earthenware pot of the same name, is simply delicious. Djaja mahamara is also popular: chicken stuffed with almonds, couscous and raisins. Traditional sweet mint tea is a perfect accompaniment to a meal.
Casablanca Tipping Advice
Tipping is expected in bars and restaurants; about 10% to 15% of the bill should suffice. This applies only to the more expensive establishments, however. For many people in Morocco, tips are their sole income, especially porters and guides, so bear this in mind.
