When to Visit - Arts and Events
A host of events take place throughout the year in this fun-loving resort, from Mardi Gras 'Carnavale' in February or March and the Jazz Festival in May to the Cancún Fair, held in early December. A branch of the Ballet Folklorico Nacional de México puts on performances evey night in the resort, and every Wednesday afternoon bullfights are staged, with a show by traditional Mexican charros (cowboys).
Cancún Dining
Mexican food is well travelled, appearing today in restaurants all over the world. It might not be as hot and spicy as the genuine article but the basic premise is the same. Mexicans cook with beans, chillies, tomatoes, chicken, beef, fish and rice. Traditional meat dishes are grilled over hot coals and are often accompanied by flour tortillas and side dishes, based on finely chopped or blended fruits. It is always a good idea to try the authentic version of universally available cuisine. In Cancún excellent local cooking is available alongside all kinds of international menus. An authentic chilli, with or without meat, is a must for the more fireproof visitor.
Cancún Tipping Advice
Service charges are not added to restaurant bills in Cancún. A gratuity of between 10% and 15% is recommended. For porters and other hotel or service staff a tip equivalent to USD 1.00 or USD 2.00 is the norm. Taxi drivers do not automatically expect a gratuity but an extra 10% on the fare would be an appropriate payment if desired.
