Canberra Transportation
Canberra is well served by the Australian rail network and the highway system. However, visitors to Australia should remember that distances between cities are often great. Canberra also has an international airport that provides domestic travel to all other major Australian cities.
Arriving by Air
Canberra International Airport is just seven and a half miles from central Canberra and serves the city and local area with both national and international flights.
Arriving by Car
If travelling from Sydney, it is necessary to take the Hume Highway until you reach just south of Goulburn. From here, the road intersects south onto the Federal Highway bound for Canberra. If travelling from Melbourne, take the Hume Highway as far as Yass before joining the Barton Highway to Canberra.
Getting Around Canberra
When in the city, it becomes obvious that Canberra has a very good public transport system. The ACTION bus network is a fast, efficient and cost-effective way of getting around the city. This is preferable to driving, although this is not as impossible as in other capital cities.
