Canberra is the seat of the Australian government and as such the dress code in Canberra is a little more formal than in other cities in the country. For business it is the norm for both men and women to wear suits.

On the whole, people in Australia are informal and greet each other with a handshake and for women, on some occasions, a kiss on the cheek.

Canberra Business Hours and Banking

Business hours in Australian cities tend to be between 08:30 and 17:30. Banks are generally open between 09:30 and 16:00, Monday to Thursday, and until 17:00 on Friday. Some banks and credit societies will work Saturday mornings but this should be checked in advance.

Canberra Smoking

Australia, its attractions and culture are sensitive to both people who smoke and those who do not. For example, most restaurants in Australia have both smoking and non-smoking areas, with some operating a complete no-smoking policy.
