When to Visit - Arts and Events
Bristol is home to one of the world's largest manufacturers of hot-air balloons and as such has become a recognised venue for this colourful sport. Few evenings go by during the spring, summer and autumn months without a host of these giant orbs taking to the skies above the city. Indeed, Bristol plays host to a giant annual balloon fiesta, which is Europe's largest free event. It's usually held in August, and at dawn and dusk the skies are filled with hundreds of hot-air balloons of all shapes and sizes.
Bristol Dining
For years Bristol has been known as one of the best places to eat in Britain outside London, and this culinary claim is probably more true today than ever before. The city's nightlife has taken off, with exciting new venues opening up faster than local restaurant critics can count. This has partly been due to the dramatic facelift that Bristol's historic waterfront has received, a rejuvenation which has seen acres of once industrial wasteland turned into one of the country's most exciting inner-city developments, complete with art centres, bistros, restaurants and bars all vying for trade along the famous old docksides and wharves. No matter where you are in Bristol, fine cuisine from all over the world is available only a minute or two's walk in any direction.
Bristol Tipping Advice
The usual gratuity in restaurants across the United Kingdom is somewhere in the region of 10%, although visitors are free to pay above or below this depending on the meal and service provided. Tipping is also expected in taxis, and again the customer can decide on the size of the gratuity.
