When to Visit - Arts and Events
If you spot an intriguing alley when strolling through Beijing's city streets then feel free to explore. These hutongs are the last remnants of the old Beijing and contain fabulous old neighbourhoods crammed together down narrow streets. Make the most of these fascinating corners as they won't last.
Beijing Dining
China's new-found economic wealth is clearly demonstrated in the lavishly decorated restaurants found in today's Beijing. Treat yourself to sumptuous Chinese classics such as Peking Duck, spicy Gongbao Jidang, Chicken Fried with Peanuts and Chilli and Shanghai Steamed Fish. Delicious regional cuisine, from Sichuan Smoked Duck to Cantonese Snake Soup, can be accompanied by local Tsingtao beer, tea or wines from around the world.
Beijing Tipping Advice
Tipping used to be very rare in China but now, through Western influence, the idea is catching on. In restaurants a 3% tip is standard. Bellboys and room service staff expect roughly USD 1.00 or USD 2.00. You can tip in US dollars as hard currency is always appreciated.
