Austin Transportation
Austin, Texas, is well served by interstate highways, the American rail network and an international airport. In addition, because the city is in close proximity to Houston, travellers to Austin can take advantage of its two airports.
Arriving by Air
Austin has two airports, but nowadays you are more likely to fly into the new Bergstrom International. Located on the site of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base, it's approximately 16 kilometres (10 miles) from downtown Austin. However, the old Mueller Municipal Airport is still very much in use and shuttle buses and taxis run between the two. There are also regular services to take you into town. Both Austin airports, like all airports in North America, have stepped up their security operation. Travellers therefore should be patient and allow plenty of time when arriving or leaving the airports.
Arriving by Car
If driving from Dallas or Fort Worth, take the southbound I-35, which passes through Austin on its way to San Antonio.
Getting Around Austin
Austin, like all big cities, has a rush hour when traffic is extremely busy but other than that, driving through the city streets is not as taxing as in other American cities. However, having a car is not necessary for transportation as Austin has an excellent public transport service. Should you wish to hire a car, it will be well worth it as one of Austin's great delights is its surrounding countryside, with some of the most pleasant scenery found in the region.
