Auckland Transportation
Auckland is well connected to the rest of New Zealand and often acts as a gateway between that country and the rest of the world. Air connections are extensive and shipping routes firmly established.
Arriving by Air
Linking the city of Auckland with the wider world, Auckland International Airport is located 21 kilometres (13 miles) south-west of the city centre. The airport has three terminals, the main one being for international passengers.
Arriving by Car
Three major motorways pass through Auckland: the Northern, Northwestern and Southern. The Southern Motorway connects the city with destinations to the south, where the great mass of the North Island is situated. Traffic in the city is sometimes congested.
Arriving by Train or Bus
Regular bus services operate from the Sky City Coach Terminal on Hobson Street and less frequent but often recommended train services from Auckland Train Station on Beach Road, a little east of the city centre.
Getting Around Auckland
In the city centre, foot, bus and ferries across the harbour will serve for most visitors. Taxis are available. Car rental may be required for those contemplating journeys through the city's extensive suburbs or to nearby tourist sights.
