Auckland Dress Code
Smart dresses, conservative suits or an ensemble of jacket, trousers and tie are the most suitable clothes for a business meeting or for dinner in an upmarket restaurant. Visitors to Auckland should remember that it has a warmish but temperate climate, with some bouts of cold, and so should carry with them both lightweight and medium-weight clothing and some rain gear. Visitors should note that dress for relaxed social occasions may be informal - sometimes very informal.
Greeting Someone in Auckland
For business meetings, shaking hands, making eye contact and addressing people by their title and surname is the formally correct approach. Some hosts may adopt a more informal attitude and introduce others by their first name, in which case it is polite to follow suit. In social situations, greetings are friendly and relaxed. Punctuality is important.
Auckland Smoking
New Zealanders are a health-conscious nation with rates of smoking similar to those of the USA. Hotels have designated smoking and non-smoking floors and indoor public places are usually smoke free. An amendment to the Smoke-free Environments Act was passed in 2003, banning smoking from all licensed premises and educational institutions.
