When to Visit - Arts and Events
The Netherlands has more art treasures per square kilometre than any other country on earth. Its museums are home to the world's richest and most comprehensive collection of art masterpieces from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Amsterdam also has many performance halls that play host to music, dance and the famous performing arts festivals.
Amsterdam Dining
In recent years, with multinationals such as Sony, IBM and Xerox choosing Amsterdam as their base for European operations, the number of restaurants and range of international menus have dramatically increased, giving diners an extensive choice of cosmopolitan culinary options. Local dishes include stampot, a down-to-earth meal consisting of mashed potatoes with carrots, onions, bacon and smoked sausage, whilst poffertjes, small hot pancakes covered in powdered sugar, are delicious and sold by vendors at fairs or similar events. Take note that the Dutch tend to eat early in the evening and restaurants will close earlier than you might expect.
Amsterdam Tipping Advice
A service charge is generally included in restaurant prices and taxi fares, but it is usual to round the total up to the nearest euro plus 10% for good service. Porters, doormen and room service in Amsterdam hotels will expect a small tip for their services.
