When to Visit - Arts and Events
The Torpedo Factory Art Center has been transformed into a living, breathing museum, where some 80+ studios house artists practising all styles of traditional, historical and abstract art. This is the center of Alexandria's cultural community, and it is a unique place of interest for those seeking to spend their free time artistically.
Alexandria Dining
The less experienced visitor dining in Alexandria would be forgiven for thinking this historic Virginian city is more Mexican than North American. Navigating the tongue around the pronunciation of the dishes on offer is a useful limbering-up exercise for the tantalising explosion of Southern-influenced tastes: nachos, chorizo, canachos, Sonoma greens, enchiladas, quesidillas and fajitas are widely available.
Even in the more subtle restaurants, traditional cowboy dishes such as great ribs, baked meatloaf and blackened prime rib are served alongside flash fried calamari and fresh oysters. If the lure of Cajun spices and Tex-Mex black beans should ever lose its hold, the many Alaskan, Vietnamese and authentic Japanese sushi restaurants are equally exciting choices.
Alexandria Tipping Advice
Some restaurants in Alexandria include a 15% service charge, which is clearly stated on menus. Otherwise, a 15% to 20% gratuity is recommended, depending on the quality of the meal and the service received.
