Agra is one of the most beautiful cities in India - and nothing expresses this more than the world famous Taj Mahal. It’s no surprise that this symbol of love was constructed in Agra - as the capital of the Mughal Empire, a city with architectural splendour and a thriving culture.
When taking a look at the long history of Agra, one finds that it was during the rule of the Afghan king Sikandar Lodhi, who made it the capital of his empire, that the importance of Agra was emphasised to the world. Later in 1526 A.D., the Mughal Emperor Babar created a positive change in the culture and life-style of the people - which in turn brought forward many artists, craftsmen, statesmen and warriors from among them. The ‘Golden Age’ of Agra had begun!
The next few hundred years witnessed the rise of three Mughal kings - Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jahan - all of whom lavishly contributed to the world of arts and culture in Agra and to the rest of the great empire.
Although Agra is today, a commercial and industrial centre of India, with chic shopping malls and superb choice of venues for recreation, a visit to the city is as though one had travelled back in time - the ideal location on the banks of the River Yamuna, its narrow crowded streets and boulevards and beautiful medieval structures still create an ambiance of blissful times gone by.
